Fares and zones
All four networks price by distance, but they do it differently. Below is how each one works, and where the numbers on this site come from.
LIRR
Eight non-consecutive zones: 1, 3, 4, 7, 9, 10, 12 and 14. Zone 1 is the Manhattan and Brooklyn terminals. Your fare depends on the zone you start in and the zone you end in.
Peak means weekday trains scheduled to arrive at a New York terminal between 6:00 and 10:00 AM, or leave one between 4:00 and 8:00 PM. Everything else, including all weekend and holiday service, is off-peak. For trips entirely within zones 4 to 14, peak and off-peak cost the same.
Metro-North
Zones run from 1 at Grand Central and Harlem-125th Street outward. The New Haven Line uses a separate series from zone 11 up. Peak also applies to weekday trains leaving Grand Central between 6:00 and 9:00 AM, which is a rule the LIRR does not have.
Trips that do not touch Manhattan use intermediate fares, which cost the same on every train.
NJ Transit
Priced between your origin and destination directly. The same fare applies on all trains, so there is no peak surcharge.
PATH
A flat $3.00 per ride anywhere on the system.
