What counts as peak?

On the LIRR, weekday trains scheduled to arrive at a New York terminal between 6:00 and 10:00 AM, or leave one between 4:00 and 8:00 PM. Metro-North adds weekday trains leaving Grand Central between 6:00 and 9:00 AM. Everything else, weekends and holidays included, is off-peak.

Why do some trips cost the same all day?

LIRR trips entirely within zones 4 to 14 have no peak surcharge, and NJ Transit prices every train the same. PATH is a flat $3.00 anywhere on the system.

Are these the fares I will be charged?

They are the published fares for a one-way ticket bought before boarding. Buying on board costs more, and monthly, weekly and senior prices are listed on each trip page where the operator publishes them.

How each network prices a ticket

LIRR

Eight non-consecutive zones: 1, 3, 4, 7, 9, 10, 12 and 14. Zone 1 is the Manhattan and Brooklyn terminals. Your fare depends on the zone you start in and the zone you end in.

Metro-North

Zones run from 1 at Grand Central and Harlem-125th Street outward. The New Haven Line uses a separate series from zone 11 up. Trips that do not touch Manhattan use intermediate fares, which cost the same on every train.

NJ Transit

Priced between your origin and destination directly. The same fare applies on all trains, so there is no peak surcharge.

PATH

A flat $3.00 per ride anywhere on the system.
