Privacy Policy

What we collect

Commuter Lines has no accounts, no logins and no newsletter. There is nothing to sign up for, so we do not ask for your name, email address, phone number or payment details, and we have no database of users.

Three things are recorded when you visit:

• Server logs. Our web server records the page requested, the time, your browser's user agent, and your IP address. This is standard for any website and is how we spot errors and abuse. Logs are kept for 14 days and then deleted.
• Google Analytics. We use Google Analytics 4 to count page views, so we know which routes people actually use and which pages to build next. It records the page you viewed, roughly where you are (country and city, derived from your IP address), your device and browser type, and how you arrived. It sets cookies, described below. The reports we see are aggregated and do not name you.
• Microsoft Clarity. This one goes further, so it is worth reading properly. Clarity records how the page is used: mouse movement, clicks, taps, scrolling and which elements you interacted with. Those are replayed as a session recording and aggregated into heatmaps, which is how we find out that a fare table is being ignored or a link is being missed. It also sets cookies, described below.

Clarity masks text by default, so a recording shows the shape of a page and what was clicked rather than a readable copy of it. The only fields on the site are the two station boxes on the homepage, which are not connected to anything: what you type there never leaves your browser, because there is no form to submit, no login, no checkout and no payment anywhere on the site. What a recording shows is somebody reading a timetable.

What we do not do

• We do not sell personal data, and we do not share it with anyone beyond the measurement services named below.
• We carry no advertising, and there is no ad network on the site.
• We do not use Google Signals, Google's advertising features or remarketing, so your analytics data is not joined to an advertising profile.
• We do not use your data to train anything.

One qualification, because it would be easy to leave it out and it is the sort of thing that matters. Clarity is a Microsoft product, and one of the cookies it relies on, MUID, is a Microsoft identifier that Microsoft also uses for advertising and analytics on its own services. We do not run ads and we get no advertising data back, but we cannot claim that visiting this site is invisible to Microsoft, because that cookie is shared across Microsoft domains. Blocking it, as described under Cookies, is a single browser setting.

If any of that changes, this page changes first, with the date updated at the top.

Cookies

There is no login to keep you signed in and no preference to remember, so we set no cookie of our own.

Google Analytics sets two cookies in your browser, _ga and _ga_MVBFGBW2FC. They hold a randomly generated identifier that lets Google tell a returning visit from a new one. They contain no name, email address or anything else you have given us, because we hold none of that. Both expire two years after your last visit.

Microsoft Clarity sets _clck, which holds a randomly generated visitor id and lasts a year, and _clsk, which ties the pages you view into one recording and lasts a day. Clarity also relies on Microsoft cookies including MUID, CLID, ANONCHK, MR and SM, which identify a browser across Microsoft's own domains and expire on their own schedules, the longest being about a year. Microsoft's Clarity cookie list is the authoritative version of this.

Blocking all of it costs you nothing here. The site is static HTML and works exactly the same with cookies refused, both scripts blocked, or JavaScript switched off entirely: every page, number and link keeps working. Browser settings and any content blocker will stop them, as will Google's opt-out add-on for Analytics.

Fonts are loaded from Google Fonts, which means your browser makes a request to Google's servers and Google receives your IP address as part of that request. Google states it does not set cookies for font requests. If you would rather avoid this entirely, a content blocker will stop it and the site still works, just with your system's default typefaces.

Third parties

Four services can see a request from you:

• Google Analytics, for page-view measurement, as described above. Google processes that data as our processor and under its own privacy policy.
• Microsoft Clarity, for heatmaps and session replay, as described above, under Microsoft's privacy statement.
• Google Fonts, for typefaces, as described above.
• Our hosting provider, which operates the server and handles the connection.

We do not embed social media widgets, comment systems or chat boxes. We do use heatmaps and session replay, through Clarity, and the section above says exactly what that records.

Your rights

Because we hold no account data, most data requests have a short answer: there is nothing on file about you beyond time-limited server logs.

If you are in the EU or UK, the GDPR gives you the right to access, correct, delete, or restrict processing of your personal data, and to object to it. If you are in California, the CCPA gives you the right to know what is collected and to ask that it be deleted, and the right not to be discriminated against for asking. We do not sell personal information, so there is no sale to opt out of. To exercise any of these, email contact@commuterlines.com.

Our lawful basis for processing server logs is legitimate interest: keeping the site running and secure. The same basis covers analytics and Clarity, which we use only to see which pages are worth building out and where a page is confusing people.

We do not show a cookie consent banner. Rather than describe that as a choice we made for you, here is the plain position: the cookies on this site are the analytics and Clarity ones listed above, nothing here is sold, and refusing all of them in your browser or blocker leaves the site fully working. If you would prefer a banner, say so and we will add one.

Children

This site is a transit reference, not directed at children, and we do not knowingly collect information from anyone under 13.

Changes

Material changes will be reflected here with a new date at the top. Because there is no mailing list, checking this page is the way to see what changed.
