The Montauk Branch is the LIRR's longest, from Jamaica along the South Shore through Babylon, Patchogue, Speonk, Westhampton, Southampton and East Hampton to Montauk at the tip of the South Fork.
West of Babylon it uses the Babylon Branch tracks. East of Babylon it is diesel territory, so through trains to Manhattan use dual-mode locomotives, and many Montauk trains start or end at Jamaica or Hunterspoint Avenue rather than Penn Station. Service east of Patchogue is thin outside summer, when weekend trains to the Hamptons are the busiest on the branch.
Speonk is the usual change point between the more frequent inner service and the trains that continue to Montauk.
